Since 200 the production in greenhouses has increased from 4,300 ha to over 15,800 ha in 2018. Especially production along the edge of the Sahara is increasing, and there are more possibilities for the modernization of the industry. The vast bulk of vegetable cultivation still takes place in foil tunnels.
Chances for Dutch businesses
For Dutch businesses, there are opportunities in indoor cultivation in regards to:
- increasing production;
- the quality and more efficient water and energy usage;
- knowledge and technology in terms of crop protection and fertilization for a more focused application.
Horticulture industry in Egypt
Dutch businesses can find opportunities in both outdoor and indoor cultivation. Exporting to Egypt can be difficult. The horticulture team of the Dutch Embassy has created a guide with advice for companies that export products such as seeds, crop protectors, fertilizers, meats, and dairy products.
The horticulture teams of the Dutch embassies in Algiers and Cairo have also conducted research that provides insight into further opportunities. During the webinar, these opportunities will be discussed alongside advice for exporting.
