This year, Ukrainian farmers will harvest 732,000 tons of onions, which is 29% less than last year and is the lowest level of production since 2015. Experts say the area sown with onions in Ukraine has decreased by 15% to 46,000 ha due to the Russian invasion.
Furthermore, onion production in the EU and the UK is being estimated at 6.3 million tons, which is the lowest level in the last four years. In European countries, the area planted with onions decreased by 9% to 105 000 ha.
The previous boom in onion cultivation in the Netherlands has somewhat decreased this season. Dutch farmers have partially switched to growing potatoes and cereals, while dry springs and summers have further reduced onion yields. Over the past decade, the yield of Dutch onion has averaged 57 t/ha. But this year they harvested only 44.2 t/ha.
