Hars&Hagebauer's Henk van der Meij recently returned from a trip through Peru's mango cultivation areas of Casma and Piura. "In Piura, the season's about to start, although there weren't too many harvested mangoes to be seen yet," says the Dutch importer, whose company imported some 300 containers from Peru last year.
"The cold nights slightly delayed the season. The first air freight mangoes are now being shipped, and from week 27/28, sea freight exports will tentatively begin. The harvest should be similar to that of the 2021/22 season."
Henk had the opportunity to address the Peruvian mango sector at the APEM trade show and left them with a clear message. "The first page of my presentation showed a cartoon character shooting himself in the foot. I explained that dumping fruit, sending unripe fruit, or continuing to export too long does the market no good and results in lower prices," he explains.
"How the season will progress is, as always, still a big question mark. The sea freight situation seems to have stabilized somewhat, but everything costs more. And no one knows how inflation will affect European consumers' buying behavior. Add the difficult or falling exports to Russia to that, and there's another challenging season ahead."
How can his company stand out in the market? "We're there for our customers in good times and bad. Why make importing hard?
