Mr. Mustapha Aouragh, Ph.D. in Agricultural management and Farm Manager at Maisadour Morocco, supervised a conclusive trial for Okra production in Morocco. The trial took place in the Souss region.
Morocco already produces and exports small quantities of small-sized varieties of Gumbo. The new trial concerns a longer variety, measuring at least 11 cm.
Mr. Mustapha Aouragh said: "Production of Okra will definitely succeed in Morocco. The weather is very suitable, and the geographical proximity to Europe is a major advantage over the competition in Kenya, Rwanda, and even Egypt".
Mr. Aouragh explains: "Accordi
ng to my estimates, the yield per ha is 15-22 tons. This is very satisfactory. We can implement 2 campaigns per years: In January, when watering is only carried out in the case of a prolonged drought, and in the summer, using irrigation facilities and watering at regular intervals".
The first exports of Okra by Maisadour Morocco are intended to the United Kingdom and France, according to Mr. Aouragh, although it is still early to comment on the volumes.
