Spanish endive season started for Dutch Mts. Broersen

"As all prices go up, we're seeing an increase in sales of whole endive heads"

This week the Spanish endive season has started again at Mts Broersen in The Netherlands. "With the end of the Dutch season and the good connection of the Spanish product, we can maintain a good continuity of availability," explains Niels Broersen.

"Together with our Spanish partner, we are aiming for a Dutch type of endive. Green, long heads is the product our customers are asking for. Our goal is to have endive available again this year throughout the entire winter," says Niels. "The quality of the product is good and comes with 9 to 12 heads in 6 kg."

According to the producer, the endive demand for the fresh market is quite stable. "In recent years we have seen a shift from 6 kg crates to packages of whole endive heads of 5kg, 8 pieces or 5 pieces per pack. This increases shelf life as the product dries out less and is less damaged when displayed. We can offer all these varying quantities and packaging on a daily basis.

"Many growers for the fresh market stop during the winter season. To ensure continuity for our customers, we went to Spain to look for the right varieties for this crop. In doing so, we made sure that we could enter the market with a green product that is in demand," says Niels. "As all prices are increasing, we are seeing an increase in sales of whole endive heads. The product is significantly cheaper than its processed form. How this will develop in the coming period cannot yet be foreseen."
