OP Eco Farm

Excellent start of the season for kaki persimmons

"Commercialization at OP Eco Farm, which gathers 70 producers, is continuing among many difficulties," reports Maurizio Fiorenza, commercial manager of the PO located in the Sicilian hinterland.

Maurizio Fiorenza

"We are waiting for the typical fall temperatures for citrus fruit to ripen in order to start with harvesting operations for the 2022/23 campaign, even though some have started with the first pallets of Navel oranges by degreening the produce. We are expecting to start in mid-November, as we prefer fruits to ripen on the trees without putting quality at risk or losing the loyalty of our partners or final consumers."

The Eco Farm management team

"The quantity of citrus fruits per hectare is lower than last year, with medium-large grades. This is due to the adverse conditions during veraison, which affected setting. While we wait for the citrus fruit, the kaki persimmon season started three weeks ago and is looking good. We grow these persimmons on 25 hectares, with another 10 ready next year and with a current estimated quantity of 800 ton, which will become 1000 ton in total."

"Brix level, flavor and appearance make these fruits appealing, so much so that quotations are satisfactory. Despite the increase in the price of CO2 (needed to remove tannins from the fruits) and in all the costs related to packaging, we still manage to cover production costs. We are hoping high-quality will continue to be rewarded."

"While kaki persimmons are doing well, things seem to be picking up for table grapes after a terrible season, with an increase in demand and prices, which have reached 20 eurocents per kg more than last week. Us producers have decided to arrange a meeting at the end of the season to analyze and assess future productions to avoid similar situations in the future."
