Potato prices week 43/44:

'Local offers prevailed'

Local products clearly prevailed, only occasionally flanked by French products, the BLE reports. The assortment had not changed significantly. In terms of volume, it was sufficient to meet demand. Sales options were limited in some places due to the autumn holidays. However, there were no effects on the prices. These mostly remained at the last week's levels. In Frankfurt, large-caliber items were scarce and quite expensive. There, firm-cooking varieties in particular were the focus of interest.

Rhineland-Palatinate: Limited supply
The slow demand for table potatoes is currently being met by a limited supply, as many lots from the already smaller harvest are not available to the market due to sweating while in storage. Where stock is already being called off, significant storage surcharges are necessary to make them available. On the other hand, price reductions were recorded for processing potatoes for French fry production, and there is pressure to sell the last lots from the field, according to the Rhineland-Palatinate Chamber of Agriculture.

Lower Saxony: table potato harvest completed
Depending on the quality, price increases or reductions are still possible. Please note the following market information: The table potato harvest has been completed. Early varieties are experiencing increased germination due to the weather conditions and there is currently not a very large supply of stored/firm cooking qualities, according to Bauernverband Nordostniedersachsen e.V.

Hesse: Harvesting work completed
Except for a few remaining areas, harvesting operations in Hesse have been completed. Yields are often below average; in some cases well below 40 t/ha. On the potato market, marketing is proceeding quietly. Large-caliber goods are in demand and these are fetching premium prices. Ware is currently available from warehouses as well as from provisional leases. Much germination is already evident. Prices remain unchanged from the previous week.

Schleswig-Holstein: Limited supply, quiet demand
Throughout Germany, there are only remaining areas that need to be cleared. In many places, potatoes are being stored. Supply is limited for the time being, as the goods have to lie in storage for a while, becoming more firm. Demand is rather slow, which is balancing out the market. The price levels, including surcharges for warehoused goods, is also holding this week. According to the Schleswig-Holstein Chamber of Agriculture, sales of potatoes on special offer are brisker to a lesser extent. According to reports from the Netherlands, 512 dt/ha have been harvested there on an expanded acreage, totaling 3.9 million tons of table and processing potatoes (2021: 3.3 million tons).
