Frankort&Koning takes SproutCam into use

'No human can beat 16 images per Brussel sprout on a full sorter"

This season, Frankort & Koning began using the Sproutcam. "It's wonderful to see how this machine uses 3D image analysis to see how ripe and skew the sprouts are and select their height and width to the millimeter," says Harm Aben, responsible for Brussel sprouts at this Dutch company.

"As soon as we switch this machine on, the belts start rolling, taking hundreds of images using a strong flash. It ejects the irregular sprouts."

"Those can, thus, not proceed any further in the process. Sixteen images per sprout and that, on a full sorter, no human can beat that," exclaims Harm.

"We began using this sorter because Brussels sprouts are natural products that's quality is highly dependent on (weather) conditions during growth. Not only does it save a ton of manual work, but you get better selected, uniform sprouts with far better than normal shelf life."

"Our client feedback has been very positive. They, too, experience less wastage in their stores. Our growers also support this innovation. If those in the chain keep improving quality, ultimately, the whole chain benefits," Harm concludes.
