The Xinjiang red grape season is coming to an end, overall sales not ideal

Because of its unique climatic conditions, Xinjiang produces many delicious melons and red grapes. Xinjiang red grapes are nearing the end of the season. In order to understand the performance of this season, Freshplaza and Mr. Luo Peng from Xinjiang Bowo Hengyuan Agricultural Technology Co., Ltd. had a conversation.

"Xinjiang's red grape production has decreased by 30% this year, mainly because the high temperature and dry weather have affected the growth of berries. Secondly, the planting area of red grapes is decreasing, and many farmers are changing to new varieties. In addition, affected by this year's climate, the grapes have higher sugar content, improved taste, and extended shelf life. Compared with previous years, the price of the origin increased this year, among which the Red Global has increased by about 20%-25%, and Cressen has increased by about 15%.”

The sales of Xinjiang red grapes are not satisfactory this season. According to Mr. Luo's comments, one of the reasons is that the grapes are small in size, and their appearance is not as good as in previous years. Secondly, the overall supply of the current fruit market is sufficient, and the supply of some varieties exceeds demand. Thirdly, the frequent lockdowns led to poor circulation and affected market consumption. Meanwhile, Xinjiang red grapes have been hit by other grape varieties, such as Sunshine Rose. This year, the Sunshine Rose have had high yields, and the prices are cheaper than in previous years. It has expanded to third- and fourth-tier cities, taking part of the market share of the traditional varieties.

Southeast Asia is the company's main export market. Mr. Luo said that it faces many challenges this year, such as the increase in tariffs in Bangladesh, the decline in market consumption due to the pandemic, and the depreciation of the currencies of various countries due to the increase in US dollar interest rates, leading to rising import costs.

Due to his long-term focus on the management of Xinjiang grapes, Mr. Luo shared his observations on the advantages and disadvantages of the Xinjiang grape industry.

"Xinjiang has abundant light resources, high temperature and little rainfall, and large temperature difference between day and night, which makes the local grapes have high sugar content, brightness and hardness, few diseases and insect pests, and almost no pesticide residues in the fruit. These are the advantages of Xinjiang's grape industry. The disadvantage is, the management area per capita is large, the management is relatively extensive and the level of cultivation technology is relatively backward, mainly in the application of fertilizer.

"For example, some farmers have not yet understood that grapes need fertilizer during the growth period to achieve a nutritional balance. Scientific fertilization and the increased application of organic fertilizers reduce or fail to absorb the necessary trace elements for grapes, resulting in a decline in quality. Moreover, some farmers are planting new grape varieties, but these new varieties have not been sufficiently tested and verified, which hinders the development of the grape industry.

In order to improve the above situation, Bowo Hengyuan Agriculture is trying to carry out the industrialized cultivation of grapes in the way of "company + cooperative + farmers". "Under the guidance of technology and investment, the shortcomings of Xinjiang's grape industry can be overcome and there is room for improvement." Mr. Luo added.

Xinjiang Bowo Hengyuan Agricultural Technology Co., Ltd. is engaged in the cultivation, acquisition, primary processing, and sales of fruits, mainly grapes. Through cooperation with Good Farmer and sales at the domestic wholesale market, its business covers domestic sales and export.
