First crop expected end October

"Brooks most promising early-season Chilean cherry variety"

Suda Cheng and Fiorella Bonino Sotomayor both work at work at Los Andes Beltroad. Suda from Shanghai and Fiorella from Santiago in Chile. The company specializes in the sales and marketing of Chilean fresh produce into China.

At the moment the company is focusing on the preparations and arrivals of the earliest cherry from Chile to China.

Fiorella explains: “We are looking into getting new varieties from the early production regions in the North of Chile such as Ovalle and Les Marine Valley. In this relatively new production region, Brooks, Royal dawn, Santina and Lapins have been planted. At the moment it seems that the best early variety will be the Brooks cherries. Now, Brooks is a well-known variety, the question is how well it will perform in the North of Chile. Early cherries going to China fetch high prices. Some quality varieties require more cool hours than others, in this respect Brooks seems to performing well.”

Prisco is a new cherry variety that was exported to China last two seasons. This year it’s a variety to watch. “Compared to other cherry varieties, Prisco is a larger cherry. Other cherry varieties are Jumbo, Super Jumbo or Giants. Prisco is starting at 3, 4, or 5 Jumbo. The color is also slightly darker, which Chinese consumer like. The firmness of this cherry remains to be seen”, says Suda: “all together a variety with good potential in China.

Last week Chile’s first symposium for early cherries took place in Ovalle. Here the Chilean cherry industry was present to discuss latest trends and developments. Fiorella has delivered a presentation on the event, about China and cherries market post Covid situation in China. Suda continues: “in addition to planting and varietal selection, there have been improvements in sourcing, sorting and packing to get the cherries in better shapes to their final destinations. Early cherries traditional sell at high prices on the market. Post-pandemic we see that air freight prices are still high. This year we expect the early harvest to start in the last week of October”.
