Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture

Fewer potatoes due to drought

According to preliminary estimates by the Special Harvest and Quality Evaluation (BEE), this year's potato harvest will be considerably smaller than those of previous years.

According to the German Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture, the crop is estimated at around 10.3 million tons, which would be 9 percent less than last year and 5 percent less than the multi-year average. The yield per hectare is estimated at 38 tons, 12 percent lower than last year and 8 percent lower than the multi-year average.

The reasons for the decline in crop volume are drought and heat in the summer. Significant losses were recorded on non-irrigated land in particular. The expansion of cultivation area by around 8,000 hectares to 266,800 hectares in 2022 was unable to compensate for the yield declines.
