Madhya Pradesh garlic farmers yielded nearly two million tons this season, benefiting from incentives under the ‘one district one product’ scheme. However, the glut drove down prices sharply to between ₹3 and 8 a kg. Now, growers are destroying their harvests as prices are too low. Onion prices are trending lower too, benefiting consumers but hurting farmers.
Farmers have launched protests in the state, seeking compensation for the losses. In the state’s garlic belts of Neemuch, Mandsaur, Ujjain and Shajapur that come under the Malwa region, many farmers have dumped their produce.
