In 2004, the year before citrus greening arrived in the state, Florida citrus growers produced 242 million boxes of oranges. But in its latest forecast issued in July, the USDA estimates that Florida's orange groves will only produce about 41 million boxes this year. This yield will be the lowest since the 1944-45 season, when growers produced 42.1 million boxes.
Oranges grown in Florida are primarily used to produce commercially-sold orange juice under brands like Tropicana, Minute Maid, and Florida's Natural, but the steep drop in production is affecting all levels of the citrus industry.
