Sana 2022, organic and natural products fair has officially been announced

SANA 2022-the Organic and Natural Exhibition, scheduled to take place at BolognaFiere from Thursday 8 to Sunday 11 September, is moving towards the B2B sector and proving to be an international platform where the future of the entire world of organic and natural production is being designed. A press conference was held on 5 July 2022, during the presentation of the event, anticipating the latest data on the impact of inflation on the consumption of organic products, by Nomisma.

The presence of buyers from more than 40 countries around the world has been confirmed, with a large representation of supermarket chain operators, distributors and organic market leaders arriving from Austria, Denmark, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, Romania, Serbia, Slovenia, Spain and Sweden for Europe; the United States and Canada for North America; Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates for the Middle East; and, Korea and Indonesia for Asia.

In its 34th edition, the fair is back to its pre-pandemic format and will span six pavilions with three macro-areas of focus. The Food area, which will feature a comprehensive overview of organic and natural agribusiness, including new trends, innovations and research in favor of organic, healthy and fair food; The Care & Beauty area, where manufacturers and distributors of cosmetics, natural and organic body care products, supplements and herbal medicine will be exhibiting; and the Green Lifestyle area, with products and solutions targeted at consumers who want an ecological, sustainable and socially responsible lifestyle.

Among the focuses of Sana 2022, the States-General of Organic are back with Rivoluzione Bio, in its fourth edition, which is a two-day debate among institutions, specialists and stakeholders in the supply chain, with a discussion on the new organic law and the latest market data. The States-General of Organic are promoted by BolognaFiere, in collaboration with AssoBio and FederBio - as part of the project Being Organic in EU managed by FederBio in partnership with Naturland DE and co-financed by the EU under EU Reg. n.1144/2014 - and organized with the organizational secretariat of Nomisma. They will host the presentation of the Sana Observatory realized with the support of ICE.

The preliminary data confirmed Italy's leading role in the sector and pointed to a decline in organic consumption after the consistent growth associated with the pandemic. With more than 2 million hectares, Italy is a leader in the organic sector, boasting the highest percentage of organic areas in the total, 16 percent, compared to 10 percent in Germany and Spain, and 9 percent in France, and holds the record in the EU for the number of organic producers.

"In 2021, organic food sales in the domestic market reached 4.6 billion euros and accounted for 3 percent of global organic retail sales. This record is the result of a long period of steady growth and the extra gear related to the lockdown imposed by the pandemic, which has seen organic products consolidate due to the increase in domestic consumption and the need to take increasingly good care of one's health,” pointed out Silvia Zucconi (pictured below), head of market intelligence at Nomisma.


Since 2008, the domestic organic market has grown +233% with a more than positive performance of organic exports: in 2021, sales of Italian organic agri-food products on international markets reached 2.9 billion euros (+671% compared to 2008).

After a brilliant two-year period 2020-2021 during which the organic sector benefited from the effects of the pandemic, the context of instability in which 2022 opened, with the Russian-Ukrainian conflict and the inflationary scenario linked to energy and raw material costs, is changing the consumption habits of Italians.


"It is leading to a slight decrease in value sales of organic in large-scale retail (equal to -0.5 percent in the last year), a trend also found in other European countries with particular reference to France," pointed out Zucconi.

SanaTech 2022 is an area dedicated to businesses and entrepreneurs
From 8 to 11 September, SanaTech returns to the Bologna Fairgrounds to strengthen its role as an area dedicated to agricultural entrepreneurs who can find in the event an important opportunity to present their innovations, start new partnerships and get updated on the latest trends in the supply chain. It is a unique smart area in Europe where agricultural entrepreneurs, at all levels and for each sector of the supply chain, can easily match, exchange information, opinions and find advice tailored to their specific needs.

This year SanaTech will devote ample space to new sustainability topics, such as water resource management (water treatment, irrigation, waste management, filtration management) and energy efficiency. Still on the subject of new developments, there will be no shortage of space dedicated to precision agriculture and technical means, including robotic ones, increasingly present in organic farming. These will be joined by additional highlights on the sectors involving organic food and beverage supply chains. It will cover everything from seeds to farming operations, including organic and digital technologies, process innovation, sanitation, organic pest control and pest monitoring systems, adjuvant products, sustainable labeling systems, rural seed networks, biomass, resource recycling and more.
