About 90 families are on the list of small family farmers who will receive blueberry seedlings. This number of beneficiaries can be doubled by the end of the year, according to an estimate by Ruy Rodrigues Santos Filho. He is part of a group of soy planters and exporters who created a Small Producer Support Fund, to spread the planting of this fruit that brings good prospects for gains for farmers.
Blueberries are widely consumed in the United States and Europe, as they are rich in antioxidants, vitamins and fibers, whose properties help to improve cardiovascular health, protect the liver, control diabetes and improve memory.
Per hectare it is possible to plant 8,000 blueberry seedlings. As each plant generates around two kilos of fruit, 16 tons can be harvested.
