Russia bans the import of fruit from Moldova after the latter appeals for NATO weapons

Relations between Russia and Moldova are deteriorating. In April, there were statements made that, as part of the “second phase” of the war, the Russian army should establish full control over Southern Ukraine in order to ensure access to Transnistria.

Last June, Moldova asked NATO to consider the possibility of supplying it with weapons. The Prime Minister Natalya Gavrilitsa noted that the country adheres to the policy of neutrality, but this does not mean that it should not take into account new security conditions, challenges and threats. According to her, the weapons used by the army are outdated “and now it is necessary to catch up."

Rosselkhoznadzor has now banned the import of fruits and vegetables from several regions of Moldova due to violations of quarantine requirements. In March, the regulator canceled all restrictions on the import of Moldovan goods of plant origin to Russia, but already in July announced that it had found eastern fruit fly, eastern fruit fly and Mediterranean fruit fly, as well as brown moniliosis rot and ragweed ragweed in production.

Rosselkhoznadzor previously warned that Moldova continues to supply infected products. “Despite repeated notifications from Rosselkhoznadzor, Moldovan colleagues did not take sufficient measures to comply with international and Russian phytosanitary requirements when exporting fruit and vegetable products to Russia,” the department says.
