Spanish household fruit and vegetable consumption back to pre-covid normal

According to the Annual Report of Food Consumption in Spain 2021 prepared by the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Food (MAPA), last year the consumption of fruits and vegetables fell by 8.74% in volume, totaling 7,881 million kilos, maintaining the trend there was before the covid period.

In the January-May period of 2022, and in relation to the previous year, consumption fell by 14.8% in volume, amounting to 2,844 million kilos, and 8.3% in value, standing at 5,229 million euro. The drop in consumption in this period is more pronounced in vegetables than in potatoes and fruit, with 16.2%, 15.3%, and 13.7% respectively. It is especially pronounced in products that have experienced higher price increases due to adverse weather conditions, such as watermelon or cherry. According to FEPEX, the prices of the entire supply don't reflect the strong growth in production costs.

FEPEX is concerned about the stabilization of consumption to the levels prior to COVID, as fruits and vegetables are the healthiest components of our diet.
