A flat bulb with a purplish color that can reach a weight of as much as 1.5 kg. It is 4-5 cm thick, with a very sweet flavor and multiple beneficial properties. These are the main characteristics of red onions from Acquaviva delle Fonti, a product that has become popular in some European countries as well.

"The campaign started almost one month ago and the onions are doing well not only in Italy, but also abroad in Scandinavia and Germany. Then there are destinations that are further away which have not received their supplies yet. We can't wait to receive the feedback from these buyers too. Each client requires different grades based on the consumption habits of its area, for example Finland prefers medium grades (450-500 g), while the Germans prefer grades starting from 700 g," explains Giammarco Lionetti from Agriconetto.

"Everything is going well when it comes to production and commercialization, although the torrid weather is forcing us to hasten harvesting operations to avoid compromising the bulbs. This is because the humidity in the soil at a depth of 8-9 cm, combined with the big heat on the surface, could rot the produce. So far, we have placed 45% of the produce in units and we think we will continue throughout August, orders permitting."
"During the current season, yields per hectare are around 25 tons. We managed to save ourselves from the drought also thanks to the various irrigation cycles of the past few weeks/months, which enabled an ideal bulb growth, otherwise we would have had limited quantities and grades this year. Onions have an excellent quality, with average grades of 500-600 grams and peaks of 1.3 kg. Everyone is fascinated by the red-purplish color of the bulbs. We cannot complain, sales are going well and they are constantly growing."
