Confederation of Agriculture and Livestock of Brazil

Meeting on fruit and vegetable consumption and the costs involved

Last week, the Confederation of Agriculture and Livestock of Brazil promoted a meeting around the theme ‘How to consume more fruits and vegetables without it weighing too much on your pocket?’. One of the moderators was the technical advisor for Fruits, Vegetables and Flowers at CNA, Letícia Barony Fonseca.

According to Letícia, just as there is a diversity of colors and flavors of fruits and vegetables, prices can also vary greatly. Therefore, it is necessary to discuss ways to increase the consumption of these products without weighing so much on the budget. “When we have a higher supply, the price tends to fall. During storage times, in addition to reducing the supply, we have to take into account the storage value, which increases the cost for the producer and the distributor. It is important to consider the effects that affect prices and always prioritize food security,” she said.

Marcela spoke about the diversity of national production depending on the regions, climate and culture and explained what “seasonal fruits” are. She also addressed issues such as the influence of seasonality on market prices and the development of new technologies and adapted materials.
