"It's always something on the mango market," sighs Henk van der Meij of Hars&Hagebauer in the Netherlands. "Peru's season ran poorly and the African season got off to quite a dramatic start. The weather has changed the situation completely."
"Mali and Ivory Coast are off the market a little earlier than other years. But there isn't yet a good link to Senegal. Brazil doesn't have much fruit available, and there aren't many mangoes coming from the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico either. That means there are very few mangoes on the market, and good prices are being recorded, despite the moderate demand."
"Now, the danger is that not only will Senegal be sending far fewer mangoes, but the early start to the rainy season will also increase the risk of rejections. It will generally be quite challenging to serve our regular customers. Nonetheless, you can't say yet what the situation will look like from the second half of July. You can predict much - but tomorrow offers no guarantees. That is, and will always, be mangoes," concludes Henk.
