“These operations are useless: they make the stores lose money”

Stone fruit producers visit stores and protest against “cost price” operations

As a follow-up from last week’s actions with French retailers, fruit growers have visited stores for “face-to-face” discussions.

At the initiative of FRSEA Rhône-Alpes, the fruit growers have visited some Carrefour and Super U supermarkets to discuss with the retailers about the issue. They have observed that the selling prices do not reflect the situation on the market. Some store managers even admitted that “these operations are useless because they actually make the stores lose money.” Indeed, the margin rate is so low, between the producer price and the highly advertised selling price to the consumer, that everyone loses.

Sometimes, the transport costs between the shipping site and the point of sale is not even taken into account. The same goes for the costs of passing through the platforms. In this case, it is the application of the Threshold of Resale at Loss (SRP) implemented for several months by distributors following the law Egalim 2, which constitutes the margin and helps cover the transport costs. In the coming days, producers intend to denounce these illegal practices.
