In the first five months of the year, Peru exported 16,007 tons of lemon for 17.5 million dollars, which is more than the sector had forecasted and 39% more volume and 59% more value over the same period of the previous year, according to the Freshfruit website.
This increase in exports has been accompanied by a 15% year-on-year increase in the average price of fruit, which stood at $1.10 per kilogram; one of the highest prices in the last five years.
According to the Freshfruit website, during the first five months of the year, the United States positioned itself as the main destination of Peruvian lemon, with a 34% share, displacing Chile to second place. Peru exported 5,372 tons of lemon to the US for 6.8 million dollars, i.e. 388% more volume and 380% more value than in the same period of 2021.
Chile ranked second with a 29% share. Peru exported 4,643 tons of lemons to Chile for 3.6 million dollars, i.e. 24% less volume and 21% less value than in the same period of 2021.
The United Kingdom was the third most important market for Peruvian lemon, with a 12% share. In these months, the country shipped 1,991 tons of lemon to the UK for 2.1 million dollars, i.e. 26% more volume and 21% more value than in the same period of the previous year.
The Netherlands ranked fourth with a 12% share, 1,880 tons of lemon, and 3.1 million dollars, registering a 102% increase in volume and a 71% increase in value over the same period of the previous year.
