Canadian grower plans 45-acre organic strawberry expansion

Nature Fresh Farms is expanding its footprint and bringing more sustainably grown, fresh, organic produce to market.

This year, as part of the Organic Produce Summit July 13-14 in Monterey, California, Nature Fresh Farms will showcase its organics expansion – a 45-acre expansion at its Ohio facility. Production is set to begin in October 2023.

“Organics continue to earn more share year over year, and this is a trend we expect to remain as shoppers continue looking for healthy produce that is safe and nutritious for their families,” says Matt Quiring, senior vice-president, sales and marketing. “This, for us, and our partners, means being able to supply year-round organics is a necessity.”

The organics expansion is set to begin in October 2023.

The expansion is expected to facilitate fresh, organic, locally grown Ohio strawberries and will expand Nature Fresh Farms’ organics portfolio. “We foresee a lot of opportunities in the berry category because there is such a void in production during periods throughout the year while the demand for organic berries continues to grow,” said Quiring. He adds that requests from retail partners are to see elevated flavor and surety of supply while doing so sustainably and close to the source, all of which the program will offer.

In addition to this expansion, the team will highlight its newest organic snacking tomato variety – Hiiros Cherry Tomatoes on the Vine – as part of its premium line of products at the show.

With origins deeply seeded in the Japanese culture, Hiiros (the Japanese translation of Scarlet Red) Cherry Tomatoes on the Vine bring an authentic umami flavor to the snacking tomato category. “Hiiros have a distinguishing level of sweetness that adds a complexity of flavor for an exemplary palate experience,” said Quiring, noting that umami has been identified as a top flavor trend of 2022.
