The Turkish cherry season is in full swing, but one exporter expects the season to be shorter than usual. Export volumes will also be slightly lower, as the German market seems to be hesitant when it comes to importing the Turkish cherries.
According to Talha Öna, sales and marketing manager for Turkish fruit exporter Cena, the demand for Turkish cherries in Germany is lower than it was last year. “Our cherry season is currently running smoothly, especially when it comes to the Russian and South East Asian markets. We see a great hold back in the German market for Turkish cherries, so the current demand is from the Russian market as well as the South East Asian market. We have seen great developments, especially in the Southeast Asian market.”
With demand lower in Germany, Önal states that their focus is on the Asian market. “Currently most of the Turkish cherry packhouses have a great knowledge of Asian consumer standards and trends. Therefore I strongly believe that Turkey will definitely improve with the new varieties in the near future. I would like to thank Turkish Airlines for their continued support and taking care of our perishable cargo with the upmost care. This is the key success of Turkish cherries’ development in Asian market.”
Export volumes will be lower this year, and the season should be shorter: “Last year, our export volume was nearly 3,500 tons of cherries. This year, surely our volume is not going to reach the same level, due to the hesitation on the German market, which means there’s lower demand. We’re expecting a short cherry season this year and the outgoing volumes are expected to decline by July.” Önal concludes.
