In the Netherlands, stone fruit is enjoying fairly good demand. "Last week was a little busier than now, but we can't complain. Prices are reasonable. Significantly lower volumes were announced; that varies considerably by supplier. However, I still foresee enough stone fruit on the market," says Erik-Jan Thur of Marni Fruit.
"The Spanish cherry market was great until last week, but volumes have since increased. Spain had said there would be far fewer cherries on the market, but I can get what I want. The current varieties are firm and good. Dutch and Belgian cherries are on the market again, and the Turkish cherries will be back soon. Turkish customers always prefer those. Prices fall a little under the pressure of other origins. Currently, 2kgs sell for €5.50 to €6, 28+ for between €6.50 and €7, and the 30+ are going for €7.50 to €8."
"There are also enough peaches on the market at equally good prices. There aren't many large sizes yet, so many peaches are packed in the 10x1 kg. I think the prices are still reasonable at €6.50 to €7 for the large sizes, €6 to €6.50 for size 28, and €5.50 for sizes 30-32. Packaged peaches are selling for between €11 and €12, but they were priced at €14 to €15," explains Erik-Jan.
"Nectarines prices are generally somewhat higher, but they're not selling as well. Saturn peach prices for the best sizes (AA) are around €10, the A's about €9, and the B's roughly €8.50. Donut packages (10x500 grams) cost between €8.50 and €9. Donut nectarines aren't yet available, and there are far fewer apricots. Spanish apricots are priced between €10 and €11."
"We've also already started with Red Beauty plums again. There aren't too many plums in the market yet, so they're selling at nice prices of €12 and €14. They're predicting high temperatures for the end of the week. Sometimes the good weather slows business down, but it could also be that the summer fruit sells well. Plus it helps that it's not yet vacation time and, as mentioned, I foresee plenty of trade on the market in the coming weeks," Erik-Jan concludes.
