Alann Grigny, Vivy Fruits:

Very dynamic demand for French cherries

For Vivy Fruits, a French company located in Saumur (Maine-et-Loire), the cherry campaign started about 3 weeks ago. The season should last throughout the month of June. For now, the sales have been very dynamic but the 2022 season is marked by a significant lack of production. “Our producers have lost 50% of their harvest this year because of the frost episodes after Easter. The early varieties were the most affected by the frost, contrary to the late varieties whose buds had not yet emerged,” explains Alann Grigny of Vivy Fruits.

“In terms of sales, the demand is very high and the pace is sustained. This is probably due to the fact that, as far as we are concerned, the strawberry season has ended, which pushes consumers to turn to our cherries instead. Prices are therefore relatively high but unfortunately, not high enough to compensate for the losses caused by the lack of production or to allow the producers to have a positive balance at the end of the campaign.”

Vivy Fruits sells about 15 varieties of cherries from independent producers of the Maine-et-Loire department and the company operates mostly on open-air markets. In parallel, Vivy Fruits has just started its raspberry season.
