In 2019, Hillfresh introduced Limelon to the European market. The Spanish season has started in Almería again, and from week 25, the first volumes will also arrive from Murcia.
"The heavy rains in Spain caused some anxiety during preparations, and there seem to be some issues. However, Almería and Murcia are following each other well, and the Limelons are selling normally," says Geerten van Luttikhuizen.
Hillfresh expects to offer this Spanish product until week 35. New this year: this Dutch importer will also have the organic variant available from week 25. "It's our first commercial season, and there's limited availability. But the organic Limelons will be available every week."
"Demand is good. Limelon sales show an annual upward trend with new retailers and greengrocers. We're present in almost every country in Europe. Customers love this product's unique flavor profile," says Geerten. "It's a sweet melon. But its lime freshness gives people an entirely different taste experience from the existing melons on the market. Limelons have an excellent shelf life too."
Hillfresh is hard at work getting Limelons available year-round. "The trials in Honduras and Costa Rica went very well. And we'll be testing it in Brazil again. We're also doing trials in various other countries to make Limelon available all year-round," Geerten concludes.
