Morocco ranked fifth in volume but second in value

Spain was the world's largest exporter of watermelons in 2021

Total world watermelon exports in 2021 amounted to 3,629.66 million kilos, a very similar volume to the one achieved in the previous year, according to data prepared by Hortoinfo. Spain consolidated its position as the world's leading watermelon exporter with 996.61 million kilos, accounting for 27.46% of the total. It should be noted that the country has increased its watermelon exports in the last decade by 94.74%, from 511.77 million kilos exported in 2012 to 996.61 in 2021.

Mexico ranked second among the world's largest watermelon exporters with 303.57 million kilos (8.36% of the total). In 2021, the country decreased its exports by 48.21% over 2020 and 46.09% over the past decade.

Italy ranked third after exporting 284.02 million kilos in 2021 (7.83% of the total), and increasing its exports by 56.44% in the last ten years.

The United States ranked fourth with 253.14 million kilos, 6.97% of the world total, achieving a 19.57% increase in the last decade.

Morocco is the world's fifth-largest exporter of watermelon with 252.98 million kilos exported in 2021, 6.97% of the world's total exports, and the largest increase in the decade experienced by any of the largest exporters, +2,094.1%.

Greece ranked sixth with 207.06 million kilos (5.7%), followed by Guatemala with 139.16 (3.83%), the Netherlands with 125.87 million kilos (3.47%), Brazil with 118.01 (3.25%), and Turkey ranked tenth with 92.21 million kilos (2.54%).

Revenue
Spain was also the country that earned the most revenue from its watermelon export in 2021 with 469.13 million euro. In 2021, the world's total watermelon exports amounted to 1,573.6 million euro.

The second country in terms of revenue was Morocco with 176.73 million euro. It was followed by the United States with 129.91 million euro.

Mexico ranked fourth with 107.84 million euro and the Netherlands ranked fifth with 103.52 million euro.

Prices
In 2021, Morocco achieved the best prices for its watermelon exports with an average price of € 0.70/kg. It was followed by the United States with an average price of €0.51/kg and Spain with an average price of €0.47/kg.
