Blueberries, strawberries, raspberries, and blackberries are all selling really well in Denmark as people enjoy the warmer weather. The supply and quality of these berries from the Netherlands and Belgium are good to meet the Danish demand, says Jan Faurskov, purchasing manager at Prima Frugt.
“Blueberries, strawberries, blackberries, and raspberries are all selling really well, with good demand. The demand for berries is very much dependent on the weather in our place. When the sun is shining, like it is now, the demand is higher. The supply from the Netherlands and Belgium is very good at the moment. The raspberry harvest in Portugal and Spain is coming up. The prices are very stable at the moment. We are buying berries and asparagus from these countries. Although the strawberries prices are a bit high from Belgium, the quality is good,” says Faurskov.
He says that, as the supply of berries starts to shift to local production, the Danish customers firmly support buying the local produce. “Next week, we start with our own harvest from Zealand here in Denmark. In two weeks from now, the raspberries will be from here. Our customers support it very well.”
Faurskov says they can already see the incredible support for local produce from the way the Danish are buying and supporting the local potato harvest, currently underway as well. “The new conventional potato harvesting is taking place right now. The demand is huge. It’s a tradition in Denmark that when the new potatoes come, everybody eats them. The potatoes are so fresh it has a very thin skin. We cannot even wash them yet. It will take one or two weeks before we can wash them. The potatoes still have the dirt on, but our customers still buy it,” reports Faurskov.
He says they aim to increase the available assortment of fresh produce by increasing the buying and availability of fresh produce across their cash and carry stores in Denmark as well. Prima Frugt is Denmark’s largest fruit and vegetable supplier with a focus on the foodservice market. They buy fruits and vegetables directly from the producers to deliver them faster to customers, such as the professional kitchens.
