Huelva's berries campaign could come to end sooner than expected due to the heat

"If the high temperatures persist for a few more days we'll have to end the campaign"

Huelva's berry campaign usually runs from December until the first half of June. However, this year it could end sooner due to high temperatures.

In fact, last week the temperature in the province shot up to nearly 40 degrees; as if it were summer. This anomalous situation accelerated the ripening process of the fruit. As a result, more fruits reached the markets and there was a decrease in prices.

The faster maturation, moreover, brings greater difficulties to preserve the product. Last week's weather made it difficult to maintain the quality standards of the fruit and, since more fruit is arriving from other destinations where the heat accelerated its incorporation into the market, some producers are already uprooting their plantations to end the campaign.

Other producers have chosen to wait to see if the temperature will go down so they can salvage their crops. "If the high temperatures persist for a few more days we'll have to end the campaign," Freshuelva acknowledged.

The farms that destine their fruit to the industry are focused on collecting as much fruit as possible before the end of the campaign, Interfresa stated.
