China could overtake the Netherlands and become the second destination for Peruvian grapes in the 2023/24 campaign

According to data from Provid presented by its general manager, Alejandro Cabrera, at the Piura 2022 Redagricola Conference, in week 14 of 2022, the United States was the main destination of Peruvian grapes this campaign with 41% of the volume exported, followed by the Netherlands with 14%, and China with 13%.

According to Cabrera, at this rate, China will soon overtake the Netherlands. In fact, it's something that could take place by the end of the 2023/2024 campaign.

In the same vein, according to the latest report by Fresh Fruit, the market intelligence consultant, "Peru has the opportunity to continue increasing its exports to China. The volume will depend on the situation of its competitors and the dynamics of the markets."

The total value of the Peruvian grapes exported to China in the 2021/2022 campaign is estimated at 77 million dollars, i.e. 25% more than in the previous one.

In particular, Fresh Fruit reports that between September and March demand in this country grew by 67%. During those months, the market was mainly served by three suppliers: Peru, with 67% participation (+4% compared to the previous year), Australia, with 13% (-2%), and Chile, with 9% (-2%).

Australian exports take place from January to July. Exports peak in April and May, when the country ships more than 10,000 tons. This supplier, together with Chile, barely increased its shipments by 1%, leaving part of the market unattended. In this context, Peru was able to increase its shipments significantly, without negatively impacting prices.
