Magestium F1, Magiar F1, and now Magverik F1. Magverik F1 is BASF's novelty in Cantaloupe melon and completes its Magenta line with an even more intense flesh color. BASF organized a field day in Balanegra, where it presented this variety to dozens of farmers and technicians who were able to see first hand this variety's outstanding features.
Magverik F1 stands out for having a rustic, very powerful plant that is well adapted to tired soils, which are increasingly more common. Thanks to this, it has a great capacity for producing very homogeneous fruits, offering a great commercial yield.
"Magverik F1 increases our Magenta line with a variety that has resistance to powdery mildew (3.5) and aphid," stated Enrique Ballester, Account Manager of melon at BASF. Its fruits have a very attractive and dense texture, which gives them a great pre and post-harvest capacity. Its most outstanding feature, however, is its inside: "It has the classic color of our Magenta line and, in addition, a great flavor."
That intense flesh color gives Magverik F1 a double quality, as it can be sold in the fresh market and also as fresh cut. “This is the meat color that the industry demands the most,” Ballester said, adding that Magverik F1 also offers very good performances for the IV Range thanks to its small seminal cavity.
In Almería and organic
With the introduction of Magverik F1, BASF not only completes its Magenta line by providing more resistance but has also opened the door to organic farming.
Mercedes Fernandez, a Sales Specialist at BASF, says: “Thanks to its resistance to powdery mildew and aphids, we give companies the opportunity to also produce organic Cantaloupe, which was virtually unthinkable so far." In addition, Magverik F1 has shown good performance not only in the open field but also in Almeria's greenhouses, where it is positioning itself as a great alternative for the medium cycle. So much so that the main marketers are betting on it.
"Recommended for transplants from February 1, Magverik F1 achieves very good yields under plastic, where it once again demonstrates its great capacity for producing commercial fruits."
