"Export will begin at the end of the month"

"New garlic is harvested and air-dried"

The new garlic harvest has already started. In some areas the farmers have already begun to air-dry the garlic. The garlic bulbs are quite large this season. The percentage of 5.5cm+ garlic is rather high. The weather in Shandong has recently been dry, which is excellent for the post-harvest air-drying process.

Damon is the sales manager at Qingdao Muyi International Trade Co., Ltd. He recently talked about current conditions in the garlic industry. "Major garlic production areas in Shandong have already begun to harvest the first garlic of the new season. Some of the farmers in Shandong have already finished harvesting their garlic, and they are currently air-drying the garlic to prepare for the sales season. Last year the weather conditions were gloomy and wet during the harvest season. This year the weather in May is mostly sunny and dry. That is great news for the farmers who air-dry their garlic. The continuous rain last year severely delayed the air-drying process, and so the products arrived late. Moreover, weather conditions prevented farmers from harvesting during the optimum time, which caused problems with product quality," said Damon.

"Up until now, the garlic has grown well this season. The bulbs are large and the product quality is good. More than 70% of the garlic bulbs are 5.5cm or bigger. In some excellent production areas the percentage is 90% or higher. The price difference by size will be much lower this year than last year."

Damon continued to explain that the export of loose red garlic will begin at the end of May. The harvest and export of white garlic is ten days behind red garlic.

When asked about predictions for the export market this season, Damon replied, "looking at the current conditions, I would say that the FOB price of red garlic shipped from Qingdao will be around 700-800 USD. The shipping fees have recently been more stable than before and they are not expected to rise much in the short term. The price of garlic is expected to remain rather low this season, which will stimulate Chinese garlic export. We are quite optimistic about the upcoming export season. We already received some orders for fresh garlic from clients in South America and Europe."

Qingdao Muyi International Trade primarily exports garlic to Europe, Africa, the Middle East, the Americas, and Australia. The company also exports ginger, chestnuts, and fresh pears. Their products are GAP, BRC, and SMETA certified.
