The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) received so many comments in its public consultation on the evaluation of glyphosate, in parallel with the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA), that it decided to change its schedule so that it can consider them all in detail.
Thus, EFSA will present its conclusions on the review of the authorization of glyphosate - which was authorized for use in the EU only until December 2022 - to the European Commission, the Member States, and the Glyphosate Evaluation Group (AGG), which includes national authorities from France, Hungary, the Netherlands, and Sweden, in July 2023.
EFSA received 368 responses, many of which included multiple comments, during the two months that the consultation was open. EFSA also received approximately 2,400 comments from experts from the Member States and applicants (the Glyphosate Renewal Group). These contributions have resulted in a dossier of approximately 3,000 folios, which will serve as the basis for the preparation of the renewal assessment report (dRAR).
ECHA's Risk Assessment Committee (RAC) will discuss the hazard classification of glyphosate during its plenary meeting on May 30 and 31. The Committee shall consider carcinogenicity, genotoxicity, toxicity to reproduction and development, as well as environmental classification. The opinion of the RAC will be made available to EFSA and published on the ECHA website within 8 to 10 weeks (i.e. end of July to mid-August 2022). EFSA will consider the opinion of the RAC during the review of the dRAR.
