"Colombia is the world's leading producer and exporter of cape gooseberries"

Cape Gooseberries are the second exotic fruit most exported by Colombia. According to data presented by the National Administrative Department of Statistics (DANE), Colombia exports cape gooseberries to 17 countries, including Spain, the United Kingdom, the United Arab Emirates, Brazil, France, Belgium, Canada, Germany, the United States, and the Netherlands. The country's cape gooseberry export increased by 18% in 2022 following the trend that was already observed in 2021 and confirming the positive projections there are for this fruit.

"In the first half of 2021, we achieved a 15% increase in our cape gooseberry exports thanks to the reactivation of the hotel, restaurant, and cafeteria sector, which accounts for nearly 40% of our sales abroad. I think we are in an initial stage from the commercial point of view to make this product known abroad. We have the advantage that we can produce high-quality fruit throughout the year and that we can make added-value products with it, such as jams, milkshakes, and other products," stated Alejandro Angel, the general director of Caribbean Exotics and chairman of the board of the Cape Gooseberry Analdex Export Committee.

"Colombia is the main producer and exporter of this fruit worldwide. As part of this fruit's international promotion strategy, the country has taken important steps to accompany the sector in relevant international fairs. This year we'll be at Fruit Attraction, which will be held in Madrid, Spain, from October 5 to 7 and is one of the sector's most important fairs in Europe. We'll participate in the fair with 10 companies that export fresh fruits, including the main exporters of cape gooseberries in the country," stated Flavia Santoro Trujillo, president of ProColombia.
