Cem Özdemir: "Local Markets are Places of Diversity and Encounter“

Food and Agriculture Ministry takes patronage of the "Experience your Local Market“ campaign

The Federal Minister of Food and Agriculture, Cem Özdemir, is taking over the patronage for "Experience your Local Market". The campaign, led by the German association GFI Deutsche Frischemärkte e.V., is the German sector of the international "Love your Local Market" movement. It unites over 400 weekly markets in Germany's metropolitan regions in order to draw attention to the indispensable role of local markets for urban society through joint campaigns.

As Federal Minister Cem Özdemir explains: "Local markets are places of diversity and encounter. At the markets, people from different generations and cultures come together in their neighborhood to run their errands and exchange ideas. The future and promotion of the more than 3,000 local markets in Germany is  a topic that is very close to my heart because they manage to bring life to our city centers. Around 50,000 traders work hard every day to ensure that we have fresh and regional products of quality. Local markets thus provide a secure local supply and score points by being resource and environmentally friendly, regional economic cycles - and thereby also make a contribution to climate protection."

Thomas Lehmann, member of the board of GFI Deutsche Frischemärkte e.V. and managing director of Märkte Stuttgart GmbH further comments: "We are  very pleased about the patronage of "Experience your Local market" by the Federal Minister Cem Özdemir and the BMEL (Bundesministerium für Ernährung und Landwirtschaft). It is an important sign for the importance that local markets have for our economy, society and in terms of climate and nutrition policy.
