"The season has begun well, despite the recent warm weather," says Zoef Yilmaz of Yilmaz Radijs in the Netherlands. "The chilly evenings and sunny afternoons make for good-quality radishes."
"Market demand has been good so far and is running proportionally to the quantity we grow. In recent years, the radish market has become a fairly stable, well subdivided one. The peaks and troughs of the past are no longer an issue. Just as well, especially with all the current turmoil, from raw material supplies to energy prices."
"The latter certainly got us thinking in the winter," Zoef admits. "We decided to use 70% less lightning than in previous years when we actually put great effort into lighting our radish crops during the winter. That was a great pity; we'd have liked to use more lighting, especially from a quality point of view."
"The weather's been good in places like Germany and England. So, the open field season began earlier, and some exclusive retailers switched earlier. There's a lot more volume of loose and radish bushels in the Netherlands too. But, that's also a good response to the market demand," Zoef concludes.
