"This season the mango production volume in Panzhihua is expected to decline"

The domestic mango season in China is about to begin. The mango production volume in Panzhihua is expected to decline this season because weather conditions have been less than ideal. Manager Tan of My Rural Agricultural Science and Technology Co., Ltd., recently talked about conditions in Chinese mango production areas.

Panzhihua is located on the 26th parallel north in the southwest interior of China. The region is subtropical and has a dry river valley climate. Panzhihua is often described as having "the heat of the south and the sunshine of the north".

The annual average temperature is 20.3 degrees Celsius. "Panzhihua produces a wide variety of mangoes. Aiwen mangoes generally ripen in the middle of May, and the peak period of their sales season continues into July. Yexiang mangoes and Hongguifei mangoes begin to ripen in June and Jinhuang mangoes follow in early July. The ripening period of Jinhuang mangoes lasts one month, which adds to the popularity of this variety in the Chinese market.

"The last mango variety to ripen in Panzhihua is the late-season Keitt mango. The overall surface area devoted to the plantation of Keitt mangoes is rather large. The sales season of Keitt mangoes can last three or four months until the middle of December," said manager Tan. "However, this year the weather conditions were less than ideal when the mango trees were in bloom, so the overall production volume is smaller than in previous years."

"The overall surface area devoted to mango plantation in Panzhihua reached 68,667 hectares last year. There are more than 47,000 mango growers. The overall surface area devoted to mango plantation in China is around 333,333 hectares, so Panzhihua is responsible for one fifth of the national mango production," said manager Tan.

"The Panzhihua mangoes have rich yellow fruit flesh and soft fibers. They are juicy, sweet, and rich in nutrients. The texture of Panzhihua mangoes is smooth, soft, and glutinous. And they are fresher and tastier than mangoes from other production areas."

"The pandemic had a definite impact on the mango market in the last two seasons, but Panzhihua municipal government worked with several large e-commerce platforms to expand the domestic and export markets for Panzhihua mangoes. The mango growers received comprehensive supply chain support that helped them make the change from 'sitting in their shop waiting for customers' to 'actively selling mangoes online'. Panzhihua has already sold more than 150,000 tons of mangoes online. That is 40% of the overall sales volume. Not only does Panzhihua sell mangoes to first-tier cities like Beijing, Shanghai, and Guangzhou, but also to more distant markets such as Germany, the Netherlands, Canada, Russia, Singapore, and Malaysia."

When talking about the challenges of the upcoming mango season, manager Tan commented, "although we have opened many new online sales channels, the pandemic still creates issues for labor, processing, and distribution. However, it is still too early in the season to predict the sales conditions."

My Rural Agricultural Science and Technology is located in Sichuan. Their mango plantation covers an area of more than 133 hectares. They sell their products in more than 13 countries and territories. In addition to mangoes, the company also sells pears and winter jujubes.
