“It is still very risky to work in Ukraine now”

As the war in Ukraine is currently mostly focused on the East of the country, some life in the Western regions is picking up again. However, the precautions do not make it possible to get back to work for the Ukrainian apple traders, as their situation is still very uncertain and dangerous.

According to Garik Andriasyan, director of Ukrainian fruit exporter Gold Scorpion, they have no means to get back to work, despite the situation being slightly calmer in the western parts of Ukraine: “Unfortunately, it is still very risky to work in Ukraine now. On the one hand, there is the war and you never know what will happen tomorrow. On the other hand, you have the internal government, as just about all products are taken for military needs. This means it’s no longer possible to do any work when it comes to the export of apples. We just closed all the companies as it makes no sense to work during these times. We’ve already suffered big losses over all of this. As a result, exports of apples have come to a complete stop.”

As long as the war isn’t fully over, Andriasyan has no idea how things will look for his business in a few months’ time. “There are no plans to get started again unfortunately. With the current war we’re in, we live a single day at a time. People pray to God to wake up the following morning. It’s surreal, I would have never thought that in the center of Europe and the current times, a situation like the one right now could be possible. Politics is a terrible thing…”
