Sri Lankan big onion growers urgently in need of fertilizer

Big onion cultivators in Dambulla, Sigiriya, Anuradhapura and several other areas of Sri Lanka have requested Agriculture and Irrigation Minister Janaka Wakkumbura to take immediate measures to provide them with enough organic and chemical fertilizer to commence the forthcoming season.

Sources say that 70 percent of the country’s big onion requirement is produced and dispatched to Colombo and other major economic centres such as Dambulla, Sigiriya, Galewela, Anuradhapura, Naula, Galenbindunuwewa and Galkiriyagama.

According to Galewela Agriculture Association member P. Sumanasiri, farmers in these areas have already begun preparing their onion cultivation lands and officials should make arrangements to provide them with necessary chemical fertilizer as early as possible. If not, a large number of big onion cultivators might abandon their cultivations during the coming season.
