How to switch your packaging from plastics to paper

Huizhou Union Paper packaging Co,.Ltd is a Chinese manufacturer of paper packaging solutions for food products. Cherry Lau is the overseas business manager of the company.

The company produces paper bags, paper boxes, paper cups, salad bowls, and alternative paper packaging products for food and fruit packaging.

“Our main export markets are Europe, the United States, Australia and Japan and we are expending our business in the Chinese domestic market. In the past, all of our products were exported abroad. So far, our domestic clients are mainly food business. However, Chinese domestic fruit brands are becoming larger and more prominent, and they want their brands to be visible, so we see potential”, explains Cherry enthusiastically.

There are different trends in different markets. “In China, most fruit packaging solutions are based on plastics. There are also gift packaging options in carton boxes. In overseas market, however, carton and paper packaging options are steadily rising.”

For fruits, one of the more popular packaging options is small paper bags with handles. These are used for grapes, tomatoes, potatoes and other fresh products. The paper holds, because it is made of ‘wet-strength’, as such it can take a little water. An alternative option is waterproof paper, which can resist more water.

“In the past, most fruit package options were made of plastic. The new trend is that many countries are changing regulations away from the use of plastics to the use of paper and carton packages. In Europe, governments are adding additional taxes to plastic packaging products. If packaging contains more than 20% plastics, an additional tax will be applied. Companies have to inform the government what packaging is used and how much plastic it contains,” explains Cherry.

“Customer want to switch to paper and carton solutions. Yet, because fruits can be moist, this can be a challenge for the material. Another challenge comes when consumers, after purchasing fruits, store them in the fridge at home; a cold and moist environment. We managed to improve our paper products without using plastics, but still making them water resistant or water proof,” continues Cherry.

The company has developed another product line that is 100% recyclable and water proof; the paper does not absorb water. Cherry explains: “If products expect to be exposed to a little water, we recommend our customers to use water strength paper. If it will be exposed to more water, we recommend our water proof packaging. This line has been made water resistant by paint, not plastics.”
