CMA CGM launches new sustainable solution for citrus fruit’s exports at the port of Maputo, Mozambique

The CMA CGM Group, a world leader in shipping and logistics, launched in April a new service allowing the export of citrus fruits in reefer containers from Mozambique at the port of Maputo, to Asia at Singapore and Tanjung Pelepas through CMA CGM’s Asia Mozambique Express (MOZEX) service. This innovative solution represents a new sustainable solution as a Citrus Gateway port to the world.

A sustainable solution with improved transit time
This new export corridor through Maputo offers citrus fruits’ exporters from the northern region of South Africa, Mozambique as well as Zimbabwe and Swaziland lower CO2 emission, improved transit times, higher fruit quality at destination, and reduced logistics costs to reach new markets and get the most value from their produce.

Maputo port’s strategic location, only about 100 km from the Mpumalanga province of South Africa, a major area for citrus fruits production, reduces the distance for the transportation of citrus fruits via trucks compared to the port of Durban. Some of the citrus pack stores’ location indeed require only a 250 km round trip to the Maputo port, compared to almost 1 600 km to Durban.

This service will be available for customers until the end of the Citrus seasons in October.

Ugo Vincent, Managing Director, Zambezi and Indian Ocean Clusters, of the CMA CGM Group. “Our new citrus fruits exports corridor from Maputo is a solid solution for exporters in the region, and we will keep working with our partners DP World and the Perishable Produce Exports Control Board of South Africa to create more opportunities for the exports of perishable produce from Maputo. This innovative solution is another example of CMA CGM’s commitment to find Better Ways to make shipping and logistics a more sustainable industry and constantly adapt to our customers’ needs.”
