The high temperatures recorded in Honduras in the first quarter of this year have had a strong impact on the citrus campaign. As citrus grower René Bendaña explains, this problem has led to a 50% reduction in fruit exports.
Bendaña said that, due to high temperatures, the quantity suitable for export has not been achieved. He also said that, when irrigating crops, 30% of the water evaporates, which considerably reduces harvests.
As a result, most of the harvests have been destined for local consumption. Exporters are worried because the countries of the region to which they export these products are not receiving them. In recent years, Honduras has been one of the countries in the region with the best citrus exports thanks to the tropical climate that prevails in the country and its fertile land for crops.
