Government funding to ‘accelerate’ P.E.I. potato wart investigation

A $12-million infusion of federal dollars will help the Canadian Food Inspection Agency to boost staffing in P.E.I. and speed up its investigation into the spread of potato wart. The new funding will allow the hiring of 35 new full-time staff, including 25 based in P.E.I. The $12-million allocation was contained in the 2022 federal budget released earlier this month.

Potato wart was detected on two potato processing fields in October 2021. In February, the agency announced a third detection of potato wart on an associated seed potato field.
