Carrefour applies blockchain to its organic products

Carrefour has announced that it will be applying blockchain technology to its store-brand organic products from April 2022 in order to offer more transparency to consumers on origins and methods of production. By scanning the QR code on the label, it will be possible to know the origin and itinerary of the product (name of the producer, location, packaging site, mode of transportation), its quality (harvest date, analyses, variety) and its certification (date of conversion, official certificate, producer’s initiatives).

“With its Act for Food program, Carrefour is committed to guaranteeing a very high level of transparency on its products through a complete traceability system. By applying this technology for the first time on our organic products, we confirm our ambition to become the leader in food transition for all,” explains Benoît Soury, director of the organic market of the Carrefour Group.

“In line with its commitment for food transition for all, Carrefour was the first European leader to have launched a blockchain of food traceability in 2018 of its Carrefour Quality Branch with IBM. Already extended to the textile products of the TEX brand since last year, Carrefour is now applying it to its Carrefour Bio brand in order to continue to offer more transparency to consumers.”
