Lindert Moerdijk, MSP Onions

"Processing onions is currently costing a lot of money everywhere"

Onion exports are going particularly weakly today. "Processing onions currently costs a lot of money everywhere. The costs for transport and processing have risen dramatically. Besides extra absenteeism, the situation in Ukraine has not helped. I find the media coverage very one-sided and positive, but for onion processors, it has been a catastrophe since January," says Lindert Moerdijk of MSP Onions.

"In Europe, there are no shortages, Brazil is not on the market yet, and otherwise it is also very quiet overseas. Miraculously we were able to send onions to Ivory Coast for a long time, but otherwise, it is very tame. The export in the last four to five weeks is too low, see the latest export figures of less than 17,000 tons. Exports may still be ahead of last year, but there are also an awful lot of onions all over Europe."

"The fair price was normally a target price for a grower and processor at which trade can take place, but with the current fair prices, a processor cannot buy at all. The bale price is almost the same. Reality is therefore lost in this market. It's good to see that the grower prices have remained stable. A lower grower's price is not going to solve anything either, alternatives for sales must be sought and processors will have to reflect what wisdom is in a difficult market like this."
