Last January, at the end of the blueberry season, PerfoTec’s field service engineer Louis Van Waversveld went to several packers in Chile to test various packaging solutions.
During this test at multiple companies in Chile PerfoTec packed blueberries with a shuttle tray, with top seal packaging and in bulk with a PerfoTec LinerBag. The blueberries were stored for 30 days at zero degrees to imitate the lengthy sea freight journey from Chile to the European consumers.
PerfoTec ensures a longer shelf life for vegetables, fruits and flowers in a responsible and environmentally friendly way. In Chile, PerfoTec used the PerfoTec LinerBag which is a solution for storage and transport of fruits and vegetables in bulk. A PerfoTec LinerBag can be microperforated and tailor-made for the products’ needs. The PerfoTec LinerBaq is certified home compostable by TUV Austria. PerfoTec also used for the top seal packaging an innovative recyclable micro-perforated film. The packaging of blueberries with a MAP shuttle tray is also a PerfoTec innovative solution to reduce the use of plastic packaging in the logistic supply chain. As a shuttle tray can be returned after transport, it can be used multiple times and therefore contributes to the reduction of plastic and CO2 emissions.
The results in Chile were satisfying and some companies were very pleased with the MAP shuttle tray solution to pack their blueberries. They are willing to investigate this new innovative solution in their supply chain. The other PerfoTec solutions also showed results and will be used with packers who have a different preference to pack their blueberries. Even it was at the end of the season the blueberries remained their freshness, taste and colour for more than 30 days.
