Peter Schiffmann, A+P Service, on packaging solutions of the future

"The topic of sustainable packaging continues to be a big issue"

Sustainable packaging solutions were particularly in demand and sought after in the pre-Corona era. In the wake of the exceptional situation, the topic of environmentally friendly packaging solutions took a back seat for a while. In the meantime, sophisticated packaging methods are again enjoying increasing attention and popularity in the fruit sector, observes Peter Schiffmann, Managing Director of A+P Service, based in Jork.

Three different types of sustainable packaging options:
Gluing, zipping and banding.

"The topic of sustainable packaging continues to be a big issue," says Schiffmann, describing the current trend in the fruit sector. "The demands from the market have clearly given us the mandate that we must achieve sustainability in the packaging sector! We offer a wide range of novel packaging processes, namely gluing, banding, and zipping. Banding is still the most sought-after solution with an inexhaustible potential, proven in the organic sector as well as by conventional packers."

For many years, A+P Service has been a partner for fruit & vegetable sorting systems as well as packaging machines with labeling technology.

Schiffmann: "Furthermore, A+P Service has developed a variety of labeling and packaging without labels to series production readiness, so that adhesive materials with labels can be completely dispensed with. The necessary markings and barcode is applied to the tray using laser technology."

Right: Numerous products can already be packaged using zipper technology.

Gentle and versatile tray sealing
Brand new to the portfolio of the company is the zipping process, which was conceived last year in close cooperation with a partner. Says Schiffmann: "Firstly, the problem arose that with certain types of fruit, such as apples, you have to reckon with widely varying calibers. Secondly, the sustainable cartons and cardboard trays still had to be taped or zipped. With the new zipping technology, a sustainable sealing technology has finally been invented without the need for any glue or additional materials. Last but not least, the versatility in application speaks particularly in favor of the zipping technology, because any cardboard and paperboard trays can be sealed using this technology."
