Greenhouse cucumber category grows to meet increasing demand

Supplies of greenhouse cucumbers are strong currently.

“Mexico is still in production and Canadian production is starting up” says Jeff Madu, Vice-President of Sales for Windset Farms® based in Delta, B.C. “There are great supplies from all regions.”

Greenhouse cucumber supplies are very similar compared to last year at this time. “This time of year all three regions--Mexico, the U.S. and Canada--are in production so historically we have healthy supplies,” says Madu.

New cucumber products
While Windset Farms® has the well-known Fresco® Long English Cucumbers in its product line up, it also continues to work on developing the category. “We introduced Fresco® Baby Cucumbers a little while ago and they are already getting a lot of love and we’re expanding the growing area to keep up with the demand,” says Madu. In addition to the Baby Cucumber, the company also offers Fresco® Mini Cucumbers and Fresco® Cocktail Cucumbers, which are popular snacking items for all generations.

This line up is meeting general high demand for cucumbers from all markets, but particularly Canada. “Canadians are very excited about local production and we always see very high demand at this time of year when harvesting starts in Canada,” says Madu. “And Americans are appreciating Long English cucumbers more and more. Every year their demand gets higher as they discover the delicate and wax-free skin that they don’t need to peel.” Lastly, like other organic items, organic cucumbers are also seeing higher demand. “As the demand goes up, planted areas are increasing as well,” he adds.

Looking ahead, supplies should remain strong on cucumber until Mexico is out which happens in late spring.
