'Pitaya land' prepares harvest event

The production of pitaya is coupled with an attempt to diversify the Brazilian countryside; for instance, it offers an alternative to tourism in the municipality of Sério. To reinforce this characteristic, the municipal government, through a bill, has given the city the name of Terra da Pitaya and Serra dos Vales.

Now, the first edition of Agrofeira e Colheita de Pitaya will take place on February 18, 19 and 20. The event includes visits to properties, sale of agricultural products and cultural attractions.

The fruit featured at the fair began to be produced for commercial purposes four years ago. Eight producers cultivate 12,000 plants and estimate to harvest 50 tons of pitaya in the current cycle. Roberto Carlos Aroldi is one of the pioneers in the activity in Sério and highlights the good yields.
